Lonely Planet lists the ancient Historic city of Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Gautama Buddha in Nepal as one the most exceptional destination in Asia to visit in 2018. After combing through thousands of destination, Lumbini bragged the 7th position among the top 10 destination in the world. Lumbini today is one of the holiest places and is also an important place of pilgrimage for both Buddhist and Non-Buddhist. Hindus consider ‘The Buddha’ as one of the many manifestations of the God Vishnu. Therefore, thousands of Hindu pilgrimage from far and wide come to visit Lumbini all through the year. Birth of Lord Buddha:

Lumbini is located at the southern part of Nepal. Buddhist sources states that Mayadevi, following their old custom traveled from Kapilavastu to her parent’s home to give birth. However, she suddenly went into a labor at Lumbini. Legend has it that Queen Mayadevi gave birth standing while holding onto a Sal branch. She gave birth to a child and gave him his first bath in the sacred Puskarini pond. Both the tree and the holy pond are next to now Mayadevi Temple. He was named Siddhartha which denotes “He who has accomplished his goals” or “The accomplished goal”.

Lumbini is indeed a significant holy place where Siddhartha Gautama, ‘the awakened one’ and now Buddha came into this living world in 563 BCE. Siddhartha, the founder of now Buddhism achieved Enlightenment and became Buddha sometime around 528 BCE. Ancient history states that Gautama Buddha lived at Lumbini for almost 29 years. Lumbini, reflects over the fundamental key source to the life of the Lord Buddha. Furthermore, the inscription on the pillar erected by the Mauryan Emperor Asoka in 249 BC vividly confirms the true history.

Three earliest Chinese pilgrims to visit Lumbini are Tseng Tsai in 4th century AD, Fa-Hien in 5th century and Hiuen-Tsang in 7th century. The time honored Lumbini was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. Lumbini is 4.8 km (3 mi) in length and 1.6 km (1.0 mi) in width. This holy site of Lumbini has ruins of ancient monasteries, monuments, temples and a sacred Bodhi tree. The Ashokan pillar and the Mayadevi Temple (where the real birth space of Buddha is marked) is of great historical and spiritual significance. Also there is the Puskarini, or Holy Pond, where the Buddha’s mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he had his first bath. The pilgrimage from around the world both Buddhist and non-Buddhist come to pay homage.

The archaeological remains and finding that are of Outstanding Universal Value are very well preserved with integrity. The Government of Nepal owns the entire property and ‘The Lumbini Development Trust’ conserves it with honor and commitment.
